Around 9 years ago, v0.1-alpha arrived! The release trailer really shows just how far RPG in a Box has come since then!
"My name's Detective Cube. I'm a private i. It saved me 40 cents on the sign outside."
Detective Cube in: Poly-Gone! is (or rather, will be) a satirical narrative-driven detective game. Question witnesses, gather evidence, and never go in circles. It's literally impossible to do so.
THE STORY
Detective Cube is a hard-boiled private investigator for hire. You might've heard of his uncle, the famous inventor Cube Goldberg.
A femme fatale offers him a suspiciously large sum of smackaroos to find her missing husband. But when tragedy strikes, Cube must prove his own innocence, find the missing man, and dodge the notorious gangster Mickey Convex.
This three-act story takes place over the course of three in-game days. The player's choices change the investigation, and eventually, the ending.
If you enjoyed Disco Elysium, L.A. Noire, or The Naked Gun films, this game will hopefully be for you.
PLANNED FEATURES
- Roughly two hours of classic noir gameplay!
- A fully voice-acted story!
- A dialogue system based on real-life investigation techniques!
- A basic disguise system!
- A basic bribery system!
- Film-inspired cutscenes!
- A Miles Davis-inspired soundtrack!
- Multiple endings!
WHY IS IT...THE WAY IT IS?
Nothing has killed more creative projects than ambition. That's why I'm keeping the game's scope as limited as possible.
I have zero programming knowledge or talent. Most delays and hang-ups will be - and already have been - programming-related. There's only a few gameplay mechanics, so once they're figured out (probably with the help of this forum), production should be super streamlined. Copy-and-paste is a wonderful thing.
The best piece of advice I've ever received is "turn the problem into the solution."
Animating people is really hard? Make every character a cube.
Creating a color palette is a pain? Make nearly the whole game black-and-white.
Combat systems are super complex? Don't put combat in the game.
Voxel graphics are required? Art deco architecture and design is very geometric.
I don't know how to program stuff? Rely on the generosity of strangers in a forum.I hope you're as excited to see it come together as I am!
In February of 2016 I released the first example game for RPG in a Box! It's still available over on IndieDB if you want to give it a try. I did just now, and wow, it feels so old and basic!

Wow, check out this preview trailer for the RPG in a Box v0.0.2 Alpha from way back in 2015! It's hard to believe how far it's come.
Anyone remember when it looked like this?

Hi i just add a short movie from the game. Check it out:
It's good to see you again Revolo.
- In Devils
Welcome in my first projekt made in RPG in a BOX - DEVILS!
DEVILS is an arcade-logic game created in the retro atmosphere of C64 computers. It was created using 16 colors known from Commodore. For now it is demo version and game in on develop.
You can download it from link below:
https://b64studio.itch.io/devils-demo
If you like it please leave feedback there or make some support for my project. What is the game about?
The game's action takes place in the castle in Lucic. The mischievous devil Boruta, banished by the order of magicians to the afterlife, takes revenge by sending devilish spawn. You play the role of a magician who is tasked with saving the world from devils. The player's task is to lead the devils located in the castle to the portal that leads to hell.
How to play?
To move you use W,A,S,D, to restore the ground you use the UP, DOWN, LEFT, RIGHT arrows. To use skill press 1, 2, 3... if they are available. Some skills will require the use of a mouse. The game saves automatically at the start of a level.
What's in the demo?
There are 10 levels to play of varying difficulty. At subsequent levels, you unlock a skill and have various items to collect that give positive but allso negative effects.
What's in the future?
The game will ultimately contain over 100 levels, at least a few skills, more items that the player and devils can collect. Interaction with the environment will be added, for example destroying and building walls. The project is in the development phase, I have many ideas which I am implementing into the full version of the game.
If you have any interesting ideas for this project please share them. Also leave your comment, let me know if you like the game, or maybe you would change something, or maybe it just didn't make you happy?
Sarah just released her horror school asset pack for FREE! Yes, FREE!!! There are 37 tiles, 37 objects, 18 attached objects, and 2 effects. This is in addition to the hundreds already released in the Asset Library! She made at least one new model for EVERY day of 2024!
Do you like all of the assets she's been making and releasing for FREE and want to help support her tireless, year-long efforts? Please consider making a small donation via Patreon (it's super easy to make a one-time pledge and then cancel) or even purchase RPG in a Box for a friend as a gift. It would really mean a lot to her, and go a long way in helping allow her to keep making more models in the future.
Thank you so, so much for your support!
