Sherri what if the player character, as the crosshairs, sits on top of or surrounds the currently selected object or tile? The selector moves to wherever the last mouse-click occurs.
You could have a keybind to deselect everything, or more properly to select nothing, to make the selection tool disappear, and it could move the player character, the crosshair, to the nearest space not currently filled by a selectable object or tile, or to a "home space" on an object or set of objects or tiles representing a menu toolbar, and set and fix the current frame of the crosshair player character's animation to a default frame with nothing visible?
